Puddles, Climbing Frames and Dens in the Wheat: How Free Movement Play Builds a Child's Brain — and Speech

Puddles, climbing frames and clambering instead of screens. How free movement play supports sensory integration and speech development — explained by an educational psychologist.

Our generation ran through puddles, hung off climbing frames and built dens in fields of wheat. We didn’t call it “sensory stimulation” — that was simply what childhood looked like. And yet that was exactly when the foundations were laid that children today sometimes lack.

In my previous article I wrote about how excessive screen time affects a child’s sensory development. This text is its other side — the story of what works instead of a screen. Because if phones and tablets take away the input a child needs, free movement play gives it back. And it does something else that surprises many parents: it supports speech development.

The body teaches the brain — not the other way round

A small child doesn’t get to know the world through their head, but through their whole body. When they roll down the grass, climb a tree stump, jump in a puddle or carry a bucket full of sand, their brain receives an enormous portion of information: about balance, about the position of arms and legs, about how much force a given movement requires. It is precisely this input — from muscles, joints and the sense of balance — that teaches the nervous system to organise sensation.

A child who moves a lot and in varied ways usually has better control of their body, focuses for longer and calms down more easily. Movement is therefore not “a break from development” — it is its engine. Every climb up a ladder is a lesson in motor planning; every walk along a kerb as if it were a balance beam is balance training; every session in the sand is hundreds of pieces of tactile information.

Why movement is linked to speech — the connection that surprises parents

This is one of the most fascinating threads in a toddler’s development: speech and movement mature together. Before a child starts to speak, they must learn to use their body competently — including the breathing apparatus and the muscles of the face. Climbing, blowing bubbles, chewing firmer foods, drinking through a straw, play that requires coordinating both hands and crossing the body’s midline — all of it engages and prepares the areas that will later serve speech.

There is a second, equally important mechanism. Speech develops in dialogue. When an adult speaks to a child, looks them in the eye, waits for a reaction and responds to their babbling, the toddler learns the rhythm of conversation: I speak, you listen, now it’s your turn. A screen doesn’t provide this. A cartoon speaks to a child, but never with a child — it doesn’t wait for an answer and doesn’t respond to their attempts.

So when a child spends most of the day motionless in front of a screen, they lose twice over: they don’t exercise their body and they don’t exercise dialogue. That’s why excessive screen time so often goes hand in hand with delayed speech development. The good news is that the same mechanism works in reverse. The more movement and real conversation, the better the conditions for speech.

What a child’s brain really needs — and how to provide it at home

Not everyone has a wheat field outside the window — and you don’t need one. A child’s brain doesn’t ask about the scenery, only about movement and real sensation. Here is what works, and is within reach of every family:

Water, sand and mud — the sense of touch

A puddle, a bowl of water, sand, grains, play dough. Wet, loose and sticky textures are pure food for the senses. Pouring, kneading and mixing exercise the hands, attention and patience all at once. Dirty hands aren’t a problem — they’re a sign a child is developing.

Height, balance and momentum — the vestibular sense

A kerb as a balance beam, ladders at the playground, safe climbing, swinging, rolling down a slope. These games deliver information about movement and gravity, without which good coordination and focus are hard to come by.

Weight and resistance — deep pressure

Carrying the shopping, pushing cushions around, pulling a cart, wrestling on a mattress. Muscle work is wonderfully calming and helps a child feel the boundaries of their own body — one of the best natural ways to release tension.

Face, breath and hands — straight to speech

Blowing bubbles and pinwheels, whistling, drinking through a straw, pulling faces in the mirror, finger games and nursery rhymes. This is simple, everyday gymnastics for the speech apparatus — and it can be woven into bath time, a meal or a walk.

Talking together — the foundation of dialogue

Describe out loud what you’re doing, wait for your child’s response, read the same picture books over and over, sing. Repetition and closeness matter more than variety — a toddler learns through repetition.

The simplest everyday rule

Before we reach for the phone “so they don’t whine,” let’s try turning the question around: what do my child’s body and heart need right now? The answer is usually movement, my attention or rest — rarely another cartoon. It seems like a small shift in perspective, but it can rebuild everyday life.

And one more thing, the most important: a child doesn’t need a perfect parent with a flawless daily plan. They need an adult who will sometimes sit on the floor with them, let themselves get dirty, and simply be present. The rest — puddles, climbing frames and dens in the wheat, in their twenty-first-century version — will take care of itself.

Does too much screen time delay speech development?

Research consistently links high screen time in the first years of life with slower speech development. Most likely because screens take away time for movement and for dialogue with another person — and those are what build speech. Limiting screens and talking more is the simplest supportive step.

Which games best support speech in a small child?

Those that combine movement, breath and contact: blowing bubbles, drinking through a straw, finger games, nursery rhymes and shared reading with pauses for the child’s response. More important than any particular game is the presence of an adult who speaks, looks and waits for an answer.

Is playing in mud and water really necessary?

Yes — for the sense of touch these are invaluable experiences. Varied textures teach the brain to organise input, and children who avoid getting their hands dirty tend to be more sensorially selective later on. Here, dirt is an ally of development.

My child prefers screens to play — what should I do?

This is common after a period of intensive screen use. Introduce change gradually: shorten screen time, offer appealing movement-based alternatives and be present during play. The initial “boredom” is a transitional stage from which independent play is born.
